On Nov. 27, 2011, the inaugural class of the York High School Athletic Hall of Fame was inducted at the York American Legion banquet hall in front of more than 150 invited friends and family members.
The 15 2011 inductees included Robert Berry (1983), Wayne Boardman (1969), Kristen Briggs (1992), Robert Butler Sr., who served as the school’s athletic director for 26 years from 1958 to 1983, Kathy Calo (1979), Robert Craig (1937), Larry Ellis (1939), Dave Fernald (1969), Ralph Gile (1940), Ned Grieg (1975), Elizabeth Sawyer Hoefler (1953), Richard LaBonte (1983), Larry Lapham (baseball, girls basketball coach, boys basketball coach), Angie Suffridge (1987), and Mike Sullivan (boys soccer coach). The York High School Athletic Hall of Fame is the product of many months of hard work by group of dedicated men and women, young and old, male and female that was determined to give recognition to the many people that have contributed immensely to the continued success of one of the most noted athletic programs in the State of Maine.
This organization was the brainchild of a York student named Linnie Blais in 2009 as part of a senior project. Subsequently, students Brian Farrell, Alexis Rennie, and Nicole Taylor continued to the point of actually having a Hall of Fame. Hopefully, as the years go by and different people are honored you can come to this site and look through the details about the inductees, nominate new candidates, and revel in the stories that make the York tradition so rich.
